As mentioned in previous articles at Hometravelagentsite, I have long dreamed of visiting San Francisco and recently had that dream come true.
My wife and I enjoyed three days in the city and managed to pack in some great activities. Three days is enough for a quick look at many of the famous San Francisco attractions, but like many of the great cities of the world, a week would allow for a more relaxed and well rounded experience. San Francisco lacks the extensive underground train system of other great cities, however I found the BART, Bus and Cable Car system safe and clean to use. Taxi rides in San Francisco are apparently expensive and difficult to arrange by the standards of other US cities, however we had good experiences with the Taxi service in San Francisco. Short rides within the central area are not expensive and the drivers we had possessed a thorough understanding of the streets. San Francisco is a beautiful city that is generally populated with people that have a positive spirit, so exploring the streets and suburbs is a pleasure. It is possible to feel threatened in the tenderloin district and although it has been cleaned up, it was suggested to me to avoid the area in the evening. I stayed in the downtown area and this suited the general itinerary that was planned.
I suggest staying in this area unless you know you want to concentrate on a particular San Francisco theme. An example would be stay in at the Queen Anne Hotel to enjoy the Victorian architecture offered in the Pacific Heights area. One of my favourite activities was to walk between Alamo Square and Alta Plaza Park.
You can enjoy the classic view of San Francisco and the Painted Ladies from Alamo Square before walking through some pleasant streets including Japantown and then the sophisticated and classy area surrounding Fillmore street.
Make sure you have a fresh cold drink before arriving at Alta Plaza park as you will be faced with a steep climb up the stairs. The prize at the top is a great view and the possibility of linking up with a very enjoyable walking tour of the Pacific Heights area. I recommend taking this free tour offered by the San Francisco Public Library. You can also consider taking the many other walks they offer.
San Francisco Top Activities:
- Golden Gate Bridge – walk or take a taxi to Marine Drive to enjoy the views of the Bridge and Bay from Marine Drive. Then walk up the hill from the Fort Point area to the visitor centre. Take a walk along the bridge to at least the first tower.
- Walking tours – I love walking tours and San Francisco have some of the best I have experienced. Rick Evans conducts a fascinating Chinatown tour and his famous Architecture tour.
The free San Francisco City Guides tours are also recommended. The following tours also get very good reviews:
- Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 (including Clam Chowder in a Bread Bowl at Boudin Bakery for a yummy lunch) The people and seal watching is great fun and the views of Alcatraz Island will tempt you to take a tour.
- Cable Car Ride is a great way to get around central San Francisco and great fun too. Make sure you take a turn hanging on to the side!
- Union Square and Downtown is a great for shopping and eating. We enjoyed some Tex Mex food and seeing Bloomingdales and the Apple Store.
- Ghirardelli Square is a great place to indulge in your chocolate and ice cream fantasies.
